One thing you could factor in is that your expenditure through retirement will likely be less than inflation, so declining in real terms over time as you age. On the question of returns, a better short-cut to the answer might be looking at the real (inflation adjusted) return of equities over the long term (about 5.2%), then adding in expected inflation to reach a forward looking expected nominal return.
